That is the wail I made the other day after I finished reading volume five of Saga and went to my library’s webiste to request volume six. I discovered there is a waitlist 134 people long. What? Volume six was just published this year. What?
I’ve been happily motoring along through the Saga series believing the story complete and all the volumes published. For some reason I thought there were 12 and I was pleased as punch that I had waited so long to jump on the Saga bandwagon that I could just read them all from beginning to end. Thus the wailing when I discovered my mistake!
I am going to have to wait several weeks, maybe even more than a month in order to read volume six and then after that, who knows how long I will have to wait? I am so very much enjoying the story and the artwork I can’t impart how disappointed I am that I have caught up, that the story is not complete after all.
It’s not like I don’t have anything else to read, but you know I was digging my every other week dose of Saga this summer. Now what I am going to do? I see I am not completely caught up with Ms. Marvel so I requested volume three, but it won’t take long to reach the end of that one either.
Humph.
You comics/graphic stories readers out there, what other series can I latch onto that will fill the void of waiting for the next volume of Saga?

I think “happily motoring along” is the best way I’ve heard reading described — ever. You may consider buying the cheapest copy of the volume you seek on Amazon and then selling it back when you’re done. If so many people want it, it shouldn’t be hard to sell again. I would also recommend you try a series like Transmetropolitan or Preacher (soon to be a show on AMC!) in the meantime. They’ve been completely published for a lick of time now 😉 Given the political climate, the gonzo journalism in Transmetropolitan is timely. A shorter series would be Girls by the Luna brothers. Or, for some fun *SQUEE!* reading, check out Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl by Roman Dirge.

Thanks GTL! I can wait for volume 6 from the library, I was more surprised by the fact that I had caught up on the story than anything else. Thanks for the recommendations! I will be looking into getting those from my library.

I just went to B&N and saw that vol 6 was just now available in paperback! I want someone else to get it though so I can just borrow it form them. hehe

Oh, no! I recently had a similar (but opposite) experience. I’d subscribed to Ms Marvel and was happily getting single issues through Comixology, which was great because I can never keep up with when new issues or volumes are out. And then the initial series of it wrapped up and a new one started without my realizing it until a bunch of issues were out. (It’s confusing because it seems like a continuation, only it’s separate. Comics are hard.) So now the number of issues I need to buy to catch up feels like too many, even though I’d happily have paid for them one at a time. Grrr…. I need to figure out where I am in the multi-issue volumes and see what I can get from the library.
On a more helpful note, Vaughn’s previous series, Y: The Last Man, is complete. I thought it was mostly pretty good.

Ugh, I’m sorry about your wait. Bummer! Have you tried Fables yet? Gin Jenny recommended it and I’ve read 9 volumes so far. They’re fun. And it’s complete.

Well, I am glad now that I am pacing myself and slowly reading along! You might try Alex + Ada, which is only three volumes and complete now. It was a good story–not quite as detailed as Saga, but it might help the wait if you spread them out enough! 😉

I feel your pain! To wait and hold off on a series, then sail through certain you will be able to read through without waiting too long…only to discover this vile list awaiting the final installment!

Jenclair, and I don’t think volume 6 will be the final installment! There will have to be a lot of tying of loose ends, so the wait is going to get even longer! Ah well. I at least have lots of others to investigate and keep me busy in the meantime!

Don’t you just hate waiting for a book you need from the Library? It happens to me all the time. Just this weekend I requested Flaubert’s Parrot by Julian Barnes and then got the message, “You are 17th in line.” I was like….. “Whaaaat? That book is ancient already. How can 17 other people in my city want it?”
Sometimes the wait has been so long I have just been forced to go buy the thing. Don’t get me wrong, I DO buy a lot of books as it is — but sometimes there are books I want, but I don’t necessarily want to own so much — these I get at the Library.

Cipriano, a wait list for Flaubert’s Parrot? I’d be surprised by that too for the same reasons you were. It’s a good one though and worth the wait. Sometimes I don’t mind waiting, sometimes, like in this instance, it is really annoying. But since I am trying really hard to not accumulate more books that sit around my house, it is the trade-off I am willing to make. though sometimes, yeah, I break down and buy the book 🙂

I second the recommendation to read Brian K. Vaughn’s 10-volume series Y: The Last Man! It’s excellent, especially at the end, and it will give you a sense of Vaughn’s rhythm (imo he tends to start strong, meander a bit with repetitive plot points, and then come back strong toward the end).
Vaughn’s run on Runaways (in other words, the 1st three volumes, which tell a complete story before other writers took the series over) is also well-worth the time.
Otherwise I would opt for graphic novels entirely different in style and form, like Jillian and Mariko Tamaki’s stand-alone graphic novels Skim and This One Summer. I’ve just started the 6-volume sequence Wandering Son and am finding it good so far.
But if you wanted to stay in the speculative fiction/fantasy realm, try Isabel Greenberg’s quirky Encyclopedia of Early Earth.

Zahra, I will move Y up the list then and also add Runaways. Will definitely check out the others you mentioned too. Encyclopedia of Early Earth sounds especially appealing. Thanks!

I’m sure I’ve recommended this to you before, but have you read The Unwritten? By Mike Carey? It’s super fun and adventurey! Not as good as Saga maybe, but really a lot of fun.

Iliana, I did add my name to the list. The Saga comics read pretty fast so hopefully people read them and return them right away instead of holding on to them for the entire 3-week checkout period.
